A Day Off

Published by Alyssa Avant under Just Me

Well, with all I have on my plate I might not should have, but I took the day off.  The kids and I headed to my moms pretty early this morning, spent the day with her and my grandmother and great aunt.  Then, I finally broke down and went to another hairdresser to get my hair cut because my hairdresser and dear friend just had a precious baby girl and won’t be back to work until June 23.  That is the Monday AFTER I return home from She Speaks. I just couldn’t go to the conference with my hair out of shape.  I luckily love the haircut, I am VERY pleased and thankful I went ahead.

Now, I’m cooking a homecooked meal for my family. Something I haven’t done enough of lately.  I know I’m preggo but my family needs their veggies and I have been horrible about throwing a couple of carbs together lately.  I think I’m craving some good veggies so tonight it’s Italian-Parmesan Crusted Chicken, Broccoli and Cheese Rice and Butter beans. Yum!! It’s already smelling good!

Tonight my son has one of his last tee ball games. It’s been a good season though the schedule was wacko and we had a lot of rain outs. Tonight is actually a make up game.  I’ll be back to business tomorrow! Sigh!! I have to if I am going to meet my goal of doing all my client work by June 15.

June Goals

Published by Alyssa Avant under Uncategorized

It was so much fun setting and achieving my goals last month that I thought I’d do it again. June is going to be an exciting month for me anyway with the She Speaks Conference. My goals list is very doable this month I think. I hope you’ll root me on.

June Goals

  • Complete all Writer for Hire client work by June 15. (Because we leave for She Speaks on June 19 and I want to have time to prepare and rest beforehand.)
  • Attend the She Speaks Conference and learn a great deal.
  • Prepare speech for She Speaks Evaluation Group.
  • Prepare for baby’s arrival next month.
  • Stick to my routines better.

    Summer Love

Published by Alyssa Avant under Just Marriage

This is the sixth in a series of posts I am calling “My Little Love Story”.  You can read it from the beginning here.

Hesitantly, I leave for summer camp.  I will be away 8 weeks, only having 24 hours off per week.  I live about 45 minutes away from camp, so I’ll drive home on Saturday’s to spend 24 hours with my family, and HIM of course.  It is tough.  I do not have access to a telephone except on my 2 hour breaks each day.  Even then, I have to drive a few miles to pay phone.  Out in the boonies where the camp is there is no cell phone service so even though I have one it does me no good.

Several times during the summer the pay phone is out of order.  I beg the nurse, Nurse Nadine, to allow me to use her phone in her private room at camp.  She does, and I lock myself in the bathroom to talk with him.

Long distance relationships are tough, but by this point I am deeply in love with him.  He writes me letters weekly at camp and I write him back.  We spend as much of the 24 hours that I have off each week together.  Sometime during the middle of the summer, he promises we are going to get married.

It isn’t long until the big day comes,  the day he asks me to marry him that is.  I am home from camp for 24 hours.  My best friend from childhood is coming through my hometown on her way to see her parents and she drops by, we load up in his car to go get a snow cone.  She and I sit in the car as he is out getting them for us in the hot June heat.  She says, “I bet you he will ask you to marry him today. I bet you a dollar.”  We giggle, as I want this to happen, but never imagine that this will be the day.

Later that evening we have dinner with my parents and his at a local restaurant.  Afterwards he wants me to go with him to his parents house to watch a movie.  We get in the car and make our way over.  Suddenly as he’s driving he opens the glove compartment, pulls out a small white box and pops it open.  Inside is a beautiful diamond marquee engagement ring.  He looks over at me and asks, “Baby, Will you marry me?”  I squeal, and say “yes” trying to hug him, but mind you we’re still riding down the highway.  He laughs and grins clearly relieved at my answer.

Engagement ringLater that night we have to tell our parents of course.  As the weeks go by we set a date, one year from the very weekend he asks me, which falls on June 17, 2000, our wedding day.  This year in just a few short weeks we’ll celebrate 8 years.  It is amazing how fast time has flown by.  We have shared so many joys.  The Lord has indeed blessed our union.  I thank God for my husband.
