Family Grocery Night
I used to love grocery shopping, but now that I have 3 kids I’m thinking it’s going to be a bit more difficult to shop. My youngest both need to be in the buggy and so that presents a problem as I will never allow any of my children to ride in the big part of a buggy (my son fell out as an toddler) so, I have to come up with a new strategy.
Yesterday I asked my hubby when we’d be going grocery shopping and was night time an option in his opinion. He said sure and we decided to make it a “family thing” and go get some supper and go grocery shopping this Friday night. To me that’s a win-win I get to spend time with him, the kids, eat out and get groceries.
So, That’s the plan, maybe it’ll turn into a regular occurance I’ll let you know later, I’m sure we’ll have to see how well the first time around turns out first.

It’s amazing how much your life changes when the 3rd one comes along isn’t it? When I had my third one I thought I was already a pro at this but unanticipated challenges just like this one - grocery shopping can turn out to be a big problem.
It’s even harder when all three are little. Once, I got determined I could do it so I wore my months old baby in a sling so that I could have my hands free to hang on to the other two who were under 4 y/o. Big mistake.
Since then, I no longer shopped alone with the kids. My husband comes along on all grocery shopping trips and we do it on weekends and often nights when there’s little traffic.
We do it all as a family after church on Sunday’s. We have 4 boys, the older 2 can walk, the younger 2, they are 3 and need to be contained. I take 1 cart, my husband takes the other.
Now on occasion, I will go shopping by myself, I will only go to Meijer because it has a bench seat with 2 seat belts attached to the cart. I can get my twins buckled into that seat together and then the other 2 can walk. No other store around here has that type of cart (well, Kroger has a Nascar that has 2 seats attached to the cart), so my options are limited to Meijer…Meijer is pretty cheap, as cheap as Walmart.
That’s one area where being a single mom has its advantages. I shop when the kids are gone.
Just make sure you eat first THEN shop so you’re not shopping on empty stomachs.
When my boys were little grocery shopping was something I got to do by myself after hubby got home from work or early on a Saturday morning before everybody woke up. Now that the kids are older we shop as a family but when my boys were 1,3 and 5 you couldn’t have paid me to take all of them grocery shopping- run in for diapers maybe but not shopping for a lot!!
My wife works for the school district and is always tired when she comes home and I am self-employed and I am fortunate to have the time to buy the groceries during the week. With gas prices so high, I try to plan on buying groceries on my return trip home. Its the only way to have quality time at home instead of at the grocery store. Sometimes domestic responsibilities have to be shared.
I used to think this family grocery shopping was a good idea–until I tried it. I have three children, too, and something about the chaos of taking all three makes all sense fly from my head. Even with my husband helping, we would forget key items, give in to unscheduled purchases because of whining.
Let me just say it will probably work better for your family than mine : )
I’ve given up grocery shopping. I simply text my husband on the way home from work and he goes. This works well for us; he only buys what’s on the list and there is no distraction since he is alone. He actually enjoys going and I don’t miss it!
Also, since we are headed toward implementing the envelope system, I really don’t want to be in charge of all that cash anyway!
Yep when #3 came along for us, grocery shopping became a family affair as well. We usually go early in the morning during the weekend.
